Molding is used wherever flooring meets an obstruction, such as doorways, walls, stairs, cabinets and other flooring materials (i.e. carpet to wood, tile to carpet, etc). The moldings should match the style and color of the floor and provide an elegant and coordinated appearance. Different types of floor moldings include:

T-mold or transitional molding is used in doorways and to join two hard surfaces of approximately equal height, such as wood and tile.
Reducers are used to smoothly transition from one floor to another of a lower height.

End caps, or square nose, are used wherever a floor meets a vertical object like a cabinet and also with fireplaces, sliding glass doors and other exterior doorways

Quarter round moldings are also used where a floor meets a vertical object such as the wall or a cabinet

Wall base molding is used to border the wood floor at the wall base, and come in both stain and paint grade

Stair nosing, threads, and risers are used to add a professional and elegant look to any staircase. They come in flush and overlap styles and are also used to absorb a lot of the heavy foot traffic that stairs receive

Threshold moldings are used at openings and between two different types of flooring materials, such as carpet to laminate or hardwood to carpet

HOW TO CARE FOR HARDWOOD FLOORS

Hardwood floors can add immense value to the feel and look of your home, as well at the value. Well maintained hardwood floors are an investment that can last for many years. No matter what type of wood floors or finish you have, proper care and maintenance is essential to keep the wood looking good and functioning well indefinitely.

Hardwood floors are a major selling point for a home, so keeping them in top condition is really important to the resale value of your home. Refinishing floors will bring them back to their original glory, but refinishing can be very expensive and can be avoided just by proper care and maintenance.

The first thing you need to know in caring for your hardwood flooring is what kind of floor you have. There are many different types of wood used in flooring and each has a different need you should be aware of. For example, Brazilian Cherry is a very hard wood and will be affected by sunlight and the interior environment. As your wood floor matures and acclimates to your home it will tend to darken so you must move floor mats around to even out the color. To protect your wood floor and other interior furnishings, window coverings and ultraviolet tinted windows are recommended.

Prevention is a big part of the care for hardwood flooring. Scratches, dents and dulling diminish the look and value of your floor. To prevent scratches, use door mats to minimize the amount of dirt and sand that make it into your home. Dirt and grit that make it inside should be frequently removed using a soft bristled broom and dust mop. If sand and grit is allowed to stay on the hardwood, just walking on the floor can create scratches and abrasions.

It is important to educate yourself about the types and properties of your wood floors. A softer wood such as American Cherry will dent and scratch more quickly than a harder wood such as Oak. If you have a softer wood species be sure to take extra caution to protect it.

High heeled and other hard soled shoes can actually damage the wood, so consider only wearing soft soled shoes in the house. Softer woods also tend to expand and contract with the change in humidity more than a harder wood species such as Oak or Hickory. A central humidifier will help through out the year to keep the humidity at a constant amount in your home.

Furniture is also another cause of scratching and denting hardwood floors. All furniture resting on hardwood should have either coasters or felt pads on or under the legs to protect from scratches and dents. Never move furniture by pushing, always pick up the furniture piece and move it to prevent scratches and gouges in the hardwood.

Cleaning a hardwood floor can be very simple because most of the time all you have to do is vacuum or use a dust mop to pick up the dirt, grit and other particles on the floor. When using a vacuum cleaner you should use one that has a soft brush or suction type. Never use a beater brush type vacuum cleaner as this might damage the floor. Also make sure that the wheels of the vacuum are in good working order as they can also scratch the floor.

If you need deeper cleaning then you can use a lightly damp mop and clean the floor that way. Just lightly dampen the mop because you do not want water to make puddles on your floor. Using a PH wood cleaner in either a spray or water solution on your floor can also clean very nicely and quickly, and leave your hardwood floor clean and sparkling. Be very careful with what you clean your floors with as some products can damage the finish.

Routine Ceramic and Porcelain Tile Care

Wipe tile periodically with a cloth or soft sponge dampened with a non oil-based cleaner. Vacuum regularly to remove dirt and other particles, then damp mop or sponge with a neutral, non oil-based cleaner. Areas exposed to heavy traffic may require scrubbing with a heavy duty neutral cleaner; make sure to change the mop water frequently, approximately every 100 – 500 square feet.

Ceramic and Porcelain Tile Grout Care

Ceramic and porcelain tile, for wall tile, shower tile, or floor tile the grout should be treated with a silicone sealer after the tile has been cleaned and dried. This will make future maintenance easier; reapply the sealant once or twice a year for maximum protection. Epoxy grout does not require a sealant.

Do’s and Don’ts of Tile Care and Maintenance

· Do not use cleaners containing acid or bleach for routine maintenance

· Do not use wax or oil-based cleaners on your tile

· Do not use harsh cleaning supplies like steel wool pads or sponges with metal

· Do test powders and sealants on a small area before full application

· Do use a sealant on grout joints

· Do only have broken or damaged tile removed and replaced by a licensed contractor

· Do always follow the manufacturer’s instructions

How Laminate Flooring is made:

Laminate Flooring is made of a four layers which are bonded together.

Here is what Laminate Floors are made of:

The first layer is the wear layer. The Laminate Floor wear layer always is hard and durable. This layer also is static resistance. The top layer of the wear layer contains Aluminum Oxide and Melamine Resin.

The Second layer of Laminate floor is Decorative layer: A decorative sheet area of Laminating fuses the wear layer and the decorative sheet on to the core material. The decorative area is a high resolution photo of wood floors, tile, or natural stone.

Laminates 3rd layer: Is an area which is made of High Density Fiber Board. Some core areas may be made of Melamine products which help for moisture resistance.

The fourth layer of Laminate flooring is called backing layer. The backing area is made of Melamine plastic which holds the Laminate plank. It also plays a roll against moisture. Some of the Laminates have attached underlayment to the backing layer.

All four layers of laminate are then combined by using Direct Pressure Laminate Process or High Pressure Laminate Processing.

The assembly of layers of Laminate floor is started when all laminate layers are stacked on top of each other. Then the pressuring process will start. The stacked area will pressure the laminate between 300 to 500 pounds per square inch at approximately 400 degrees heat. After the cooling process, the boards are cut into planks floor or tile floor and the other process such as profiling and tongue and grooving the edges will start.

DIREST PRESSURE LAMINATE FLOORING

Direct Pressure Laminating fuses the wear layer and decorative layer into the core material using pressure between 300 to 500 PSI.

HIGH PRESSURE LAMINATE FLOORING

High Pressure Laminate flooring is manufactured at 1400 pound per square inch pressure. The Laminated area and high pressure backing are then bonded with high pressure to a water resistant HFD core.

WHY & WHEN TO USE UNDERLAYMENT:

Using underlayment for installation of Laminate and Hardwood Floors reduces sound and feels comfortable under your feet. In any installation of floating floors a proper underlayment should be used. Some underlayments have been designed to protect against mildew, mold and moisture.

WHERE TO USE UNDERLAYMENT:

Underlayment is installed over slab or plywood sub-floors. If installing underlayment over concrete slab it is required to use a vapor barrier first. Sub-floor surface must be clean and dry before installation. Underlayment can be used for any installation. Condo owners are required to check the sub-flooring, if the sub-floor is concrete it will require an underlayment with moisture barrier. Before you install any Hardwood or Laminate you need to check with your Home Owners Association because most condo & apartment groups require special Acoustical underlayments with special sound prevention properties.

HOW TO SELECT UNDERLAYMENT:

Choosing underlayments is critical, first you need to follow floor manufacturing recommendations for approved underlayment. In general flooring underlayment comes in 4 major categories.

FOAM UNDERLAYMENTS:

Foam underlayment is a thin layer of foam which is called standard underlayment. This type of underlayment offers a minimum comfort and sound reduction. It can not be used when installing Laminate and Hardwood floors over a concrete sub-floor. When you are using the foam underlayment in buildings with concrete sub-flooring, it is required to use plastic (polyethylene film) with 6 mm thickness.

2 IN 1 UNDERLAYMENT OR FOAM / FILM COMBO UNDERLAYMENT:

Combination of standard foam underlayment with plastic is called Foam/Film Combo or 2 in1 underlayment. The plastic layer functions as a moisture barrier layer. When installing laminate floors or Engineered Hardwood flooring the plastic side should go down over the concrete floor. The 2 in1combo underlayment prevents the moisture from the concrete to get into the flooring products. This type of underlayment comes in different thickness and sized rolls. It has a good moisture barrier, but is not a great sound reduction product.

MODIFIED UNDERLAYMENT - ACOUSTICAL UNDRLAYMENT:

Modified underlayment is an upgrade underlayment which is a thicker underlayment, designed for superior sound absorption, and to provide maximum walking comfort. Some of the higher grade modified underlayment prevents moisture, mold and mildew. Modified underlayment can be used in any building, condo, apartment, high raise buildings, residential homes and commercial spaces. Notice to condo and apartment owners: When installing Hardwood Floors or Laminate Flooring in second or higher floor, you need to check with your Home Owners Association rules for their requirement & recommended type of underlayment.

WHAT IS CORK?

Cork is the bark of an Oak tree. It is a green product. Most Cork comes from Portugal and Mediterranean areas. One cubic inch of cork contains 200 million enclosed Air cells. Cork underlayment is available in floor tiles, floating floor underlayment, and rolls.

CORK UNDERLAYMENT FEATURES ARE:

INSULATION:
Because Cork consists of 90% gaseous matter, its density is extremely low giving cork a wonderful insulating and acoustical properties.

RESILIENCY:
When Cork is subjected to pressure, the cells are compressed and volume is reduced, when released from pressure Cork recover quickly to its original shape.

IMPERMEABILITY:
The presence of suberin, an inherent waxy substance, makes Cork impervious to both liquids & gases and causes Cork not to rot. Therefore, Cork is the best seal available as proved by the wine industry.

HYPOALLERGENIC:
Cork does not collect dust and does not aggravate allergies.

DURABILITY:
Cork is resistant to wear, as it is less affected by friction and impact than other items because of its cellular composition.

FIRE RETARDANT:
Cork is a natural fire retardant; cork does not spread fire and does not release toxic gases during combustion.

Cork flooring tiles are produced from Cork granules with resins and molded in to desired form and density under pressure and heat.

Cork layers can be waxed, varnished, urethane or acrylic coated.
